چکیده

Today’s technological advances allow for the development of unmanned aerial systems, fixed-wing aircraft, that are small enough and fly low enough to elude conventional radar detection. Such aircraft could carry out chemical, biological, or nuclear attacks, or they could be employed to smuggle drugs or illegal immigrants across the border. This chapter describes a low cost, low power (potentially disposable) methodology for performing key 24/ 7 sentry functions to protect critical civilian and military infrastructure from airborne threats. The methodology is based on joint multi-sensor exploitation technology by designing and developing a forward-based fence that contains a mix of various low cost, low power, netted sensors including a simple radar, acoustic microphones and optical (Infrared and visible) cameras to detect, track and discriminate potential airborne targets. An in-depth understanding of candidate target signature phenomenologies is developed through theoretical, numerical assessments and proof-of-concept field experiments. An integrated (over sensor modality) detection, tracking and discrimination process is developed which forms the basis of the fence’s friend/ foe sentry capability and ability to provide accurate/ timely intercept information. An experimental prototype end-toend proof of concept system with deployable software, hardware and connectivity has also been developed to perform the field demonstration.

Multi-Modal Netted Sensor Fence for Homeland Security

Potential terrorists/adversaries can exploit a wide range of airborne threats against civilian and military targets. Currently there is no effective, low-cost solution to robustly and reliably detect and identify low observable airborne vehicles such as small, low-flying aircraft or cruise missiles that might be carrying chemical, biological or even nuclear weapons in realistic environments. Th...

Biologically Inspired Methods for Agile Command and Control (BIO C2)

In a dynamic and complex environment, agile command and control responses are needed to handle both conventional and asymmetric challenges. Agile command and control is particularly difficult due to the necessity of cross-scale interaction. The technical idea is to develop biologically inspired methods based on individual behavior to population response dynamics to facilitate cross-scale intera...

Intelligent Recognition of Acoustic and Vibration Threats for Security Breach Detection, Close Proximity Danger Identification, and Perimeter Protection1

The protection of perimeters in national, agricultural, airport, prison, and military sites, and residential areas against dangerous approaching human and vehicles when using human agents to provide security is expensive or unsafe. Because of this, acoustic/vibration signature identification of approaching human and vehicles threats has attracted increased attention. This paper addresses the de...
